At 14,410 feet above sea level, the iconic Mount Rainier stands tall above the Washington State landscape. One of the most beautiful mountains in North America, here are 10 facts about the 5th highest mountain in continental USA (the USA excluding Alaska and Hawaii).

1) Highest in the Cascades

Although only the fifth highest mountain in continental USA, Rainier is the highest mountain of the mighty Cascade Mountain Range in the Pacific Northwest

2) It's Name

The mountain was named by British Naval Officer and Explorer George Vancouver, who named it in honour of his friend, Rear Admiral Peter Rainier

3) First European View

Speaking of George Vancouver, Captain George reached Puget Sound in May 1792 and became the first European to see Mount Rainier

4) Native Name

Mount Rainier was first known by the local Salishan speakers as "Talol", "Tacoma" or "Tahoma"

5) Prominence

Rainier is ranked third of the 128 ultra-prominent mountain peaks of the United States. In fact...

6) Visibility

It is clearly visible from Seattle, making the city one of the most picturesque in America

7) First Summit

First Ascenders Hazard Stevens and P. B. Van Trump reached the summit in 1870

8) Female Ascent

The first woman to climb the mountain was Fay Fuller in 1890

9) Volcanic

Mt. Rainier is considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world. An eruption could be deadly not only for those living in the immediate vicinity but also for the populations of Vancouver, British Columbia, and even parts of California due to the potentially huge amounts of ash which could erupt into the atmosphere.

10) Rivers

The Carbon, Puyallup, Mowich, Nisqually, and Cowlitz Rivers all start from glaciers of Mount Rainier.

Whatever the dangers associated with this mighty mountain, the sheer beauty of Mount Rainier will ensure that it remains one of the most beloved and oft-visited mountains in North America.
